I am Paul Zhang Wen Kai, a third year undergraduate at the National University of Singapore, majoring in Economics. I decided to apply for an overseas internship as I wanted to take up the challenge of working in a foreign environment. At the same time it presents immense learning opportunities for me to develop new skills sets and knowledge that I will not get locally. My fellow peers who have been on similar programs also shared how they have benefited and grown in terms of personal development throughout the whole experience. As I have a desire to pursue a career in the financial field, it is also important that I cultivate an understanding of the function of the different financial markets in different countries. Hong Kong being the top financial centre in the world therefore became my choice.
What do I do in Hong Kong?
I am currently placed in a wealth management company handling both individual and corporate clients. At the moment, my scope of work involves economic research and managing projects of corporate clients. I am thoroughly enjoying my learning experience as this is exactly what I want to do. Though I am only into my first month, I am grateful that my superiors have constantly granted me much autonomy to handle my tasks, at the same time valuing my contributions. Indeed, I am more than blessed to be here.
My advice to students?
I am glad that I made the choice to sign up for a Hong Kong internship with Next Step Connections. For those still considering, don’t hesitate any further. If Hong Kong is your place of destination, do try to learn some conversational Cantonese. It will make travelling around lot much easier. Be open to make new friends or join some interest group to make your time here unforgettable.
