Hello, my name is Meredith Boling. I’m from Chapman university in Orange California and I’ve been interning in Shanghai for the past summer.

What are you doing in your Shanghai internship?

I intern for Agenda, a digital mobile marketing agency. They have several locations in Shanghai, Beijing, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia & Taiwan. They’re also a member of WPP which is a global corporation of PR & Marketing agencies. I’m interning in the digital mobile planning department working on creative strategy & inner plans for global clients.

The internship has been a very short 2.5 months and I’ve learned so much from this experience… not only in my career path but also using all my school knowledge and applying to the real world. I have learned a lot of things about myself as well and how well I can manage in another country.

Did you have any difficulties adapting to Chinese working culture?

I didn’t have too many difficulties… Thankfully, most people speak very well English in my company so I was able to adapt that way. However, I did have difficulties with the actual consumer behavior in China cause it’s so different from western culture… I had to do a lot of research on customer behavior and digital landscape since it’s also very different.

What is the most important skill to have while interning in Shanghai?

Definitively have an open mind!!! Being in a country and being in a completely different culture… very different from anything you can ever think to and imagine, but it’s also very fun! So, be prepare to fall in love with Shanghai and not want to leave.

Did this experience help you have a better idea of what you want to do in the future?

Well, my degree is in International Business Marketing so I knew I wanted to do something in Digital Marketing because that’s the future of Marketing.

But, I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to go into… I had a couple of jobs in digital marketing doing SEO (Search Engine Optimization) but I wanted something more and after been in the planning department and been a strategist at Agenda, I know that’s a career path that I want to take. So it feels great that I know now what I want to do in my career, life & stuff… So now it’s just the process of actively finding a job.

Why did you choose Next Step Connections internship program?

Actually, Chapman is the school that gives the credits for the internship program and I knew that I wasn’t probably quite ready for the real world and going to work full-time. I also love to travel so being able to combine traveling with preparing myself for going into full-time work & trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my degree was the best way.

GlobaLinks and Next Step Connections were very helpful with everything. They set everything up for us… We had a comprehensive tour of the city… also all the weekly events helped to get to know other interns from around the world. Now, I have friends that I can visit and stay with anywhere in the world.

I don’t think I can forget any of it! There’s people that I met both in my company and through Next Step internship program. We’re already planning a trip or reunion trip within a year maybe somewhere else in Asia… I don’t think I can forget any of it. Every single day, every experience… it’s been amazing… it’s been really a learning experience.
